Demystifying the Meaning of the Cross
Based on Eckhart Tolle Teachings
When we mention the word “cross,” we might quickly picture a Christian Cross or a religious symbol. However, there are deeper meanings to the symbol of the cross than we realize.
The contemporary framework of the cross, based on Mr. Eckhart Tolle’s teachings, presents in simple language the fundamental and energetic power of the cross, where two dimensions (time and the eternal Now) integrate into one symbolic view. This interpretation helps us understand the dynamics of psychological time as part of our linear worldview, while also pointing to the possibility of stepping into the ever-present Now as a transcendent dimension.
Mr. Tolle describes the horizontal dimension as our psychological, time-based reality, which can lead to painful experiences if we forget to balance it with the “vertical dimension” of Now. The goal is to open our perception and visualize the cross symbol as a living diagram, where we can assess whether we are too focused on the horizontal dimension (Psychological Time), or whether we need to shift our attention to the vertical dimension (The Eternal Now), in order to balance the flow of our attention and have a more meaningful life experience.
“All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present.”
“Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry and all forms of fear, are caused by too much future, and not enough presence.”
“Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence”
Eckhart Tolle
Balance Between the Horizontal and Vertical Dimension
(Transcendent Dimension)
Whether we are aware of it or not, we all fall, in some way, into the current of time, which affects the motion of our thoughts, emotions, and reactions. Mr. Tolle points to the possibility of focusing our attention on the Present Moment (The Eternal Now) as the key to starting the process of freeing ourselves from suffering and the emotional “pain body,” as he calls it.
If we focus too much on the past, we may experience regret, guilt, and depression. If we think too much about the future, we may experience anxiety, fear, and worry. By focusing on the only moment that has ever existed and will always exist (The Eternal Now), trusting and accepting the present moment as it is, we take the first step in surrendering control (Ego) and begin balancing the energy field of our being.
Through uncompromised surrender and trust that this moment is as good “as if you have chosen it,” we can begin the journey into the Transcendent Dimension—the “spaciousness” within.
“Take Your Cross and Follow Me”
What does it mean to “take up your cross and follow Me”? What does it truly mean in terms of real actions that one can actually “do”? It’s easier said than done, and not even easy to think about doing. It requires great responsibility to carry “it,” because in the end, you will have to face the death of your identity—and the ego doesn’t like the idea of “dying.”
But if you really want to live the Eternal Life here and now, this is the first step into Christ Consciousness. The resurrection needs to happen while you breathe here and now, not in some future moment after the body’s death, which will inevitably happen to everyone. Eternal Life is not to be realized after the body’s death, but after the ego’s death. “Find death before death finds you” is the ancient saying that points to this realization.
You are an Eternal Being as you are right now, not in some future moment. The decision to carry the cross means that you begin to take responsibility for every thought, word, and action that comes from your being. To follow Yeshua’s path is to carry this responsibility and be aware in every decision, every thought, and every impulse that arises within you. Pay attention to your thoughts—what you are about to say to yourself internally or to others, what actions you are taking, and the consequences they may have on others and on you.
This is not an easy task, for sure, because it requires vigilance and constant attention to the movement of our thoughts and emotions. But every step you take brings you closer to the ‘resurrection’ of your Being—a little death to ego identity. With compassionate and steady focus on the responsibility that the cross symbolizes within, you will find that your Self begins to view the world through the Light of Christ Consciousness.
“You can do greater things than I have done” is not a lie or a deceptive statement. It is a call to look within and trust the Divine Spark that is always in you, the Source Power breathing through you. If you trust it, you can ‘carry the cross,’ until you realize that you no longer need it. The ‘resurrection’ happens when you surrender to The Great Will in this Eternal Now, and realize that you no longer follow your own mind’s control—thinking, speaking, and acting impulsively. You follow Yeshua’s steps, carrying the cross of responsibility and attention to the Sense of Beingness, acting according to truth, integrity, respect, and compassion toward others and yourself.
